Introduced by Sen. Laura Toy (R) on November 4, 2003, to prohibit auto insurance companies from owning auto repair shops, and require the divestiture within two years of any they currently own. Allstate is the only insurance company that currently owns repair shops in Michigan (Sterling Autobody Centers).
Referred to the Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee on November 4, 2003.
1) A novel idea: Let the market decide, not politicians by Anonymous Citizen on March 5, 2004 Hey lawmakers, how about backing off the usual game of shilling for special interests (in this case, auto body shops who want less competition), and letting the market and customers sort out which insurance companies and policies to choose. Guess what: The market is smarter than you are. If Allstate is jamming people into sub-standard repairs, then word will get out and people will go to another company. On the other hand, the insurer owning the body shop might actually be a good idea, and benefit everybody. I don't know which way is right, and neither do you, but the market will discover the truth if you JUST BUTT OUT! Reply
