1) Intrusive Government by Yooper_Dave on February 18, 2004 The government is not my children's nanny. Furthermore, I do not want the government defining "community service", and then require my children to "volunteer" for its politically correct activity. There are other options available rather than having my children in the public school, and they are becoming more appealing to me. Reply
2) NO,NO A thousand No's by Ann Rock on February 17, 2004 This is a parental rights issue that you are proposing to violate with this mandated government servitude for graduation. Our children's time does not belong to the nanny-government. Stop this travesty. Roll it back. It's wrong. You're bringing it in first on the students in locked in school requirements for graduation, next it will be on employees and adults. " Mandatory" service is not voluntary. It is what probation departments oversee and judges give to convicted defendents. Reply
3) Not even half way by Freedom on February 13, 2004 If we really want to make graduation mean something, why not require students to actually learn something in the class room. Forget the extra curricular stuff, have them study, pass real tests, and make a "D" a non-passing grade.
Tell the teacher unions that seniority is not the priority but good teaching is; pay the good teachers more and fire the poor ones. Reward excellence in teaching and we'll get more of it. Reply
